When you make a cake layer two, do you ice the cake down before placing him on the stand for the cake above?

I did a two-tier cake yesterday, glazed downstairs, placed on dividers and then the top tier.Unfortunately, once the high level was ate and we removed the plastic partition, the cherry came out w / her. Am I supposed the ice melts and if I am, how can I prevent this from happening again?

If you use a butter cream recipe that crusts, it will be less of a problem. Some people sprinkle the top of the cake iced with powdered sugar or chocolate chips before putting the divider. Good luck next time.
