Katanas are used in Kendo?

Specifically, do the training and discipline of Kendo prepare for use a Katana? Can I use a katana instead of a Shinai or Bokuto after I'm more kyu in Kendo? I thought Iaito but it is more for the theater of actual combat so I'm not sure …. Please respond as accurately as you can. Arigato …

Yes and No. I Shinken seen some high-level kendoka use ("real sword") where kendo kata performances, but for the most part will use more kendoka bokuto and shinai during their training. If you practice the curriculum in Zen Nihon Kendo Renmei iaido, then you will eventually use a Shinken. However, Keep in mind that kendo is a sport, and if it has evolved from the classical fencing, format and rules shiai not make a "perfect" Replication of combat (eg, limited objectives, rules about when a target is legal, shinai does not feel or respond like a Shinken, etc..) In addition to sparring, I think kendo (kihon basic) and kendo kata teach much about the actual fighting. It really depends on what you want out of training. If you are called to sparring, and kendo would be a good option for you. If you want to learn fencing and how to use a classic Shinken, then you should look iaido, iaijutsu, kenjutsu, or Battodo battojutsu.
