Many of today's sports were practiced by the ancient Egyptians, who set the rules and regulations for them. Inscriptions on monuments indicate that they practiced wrestling, weightlifting, long jump, swimming, rowing, shooting, fishing and athletics, and various kinds of ball games.
Hockey
Ancient Egyptians played a game that is similar to our current hockey. Designs on the tombs of Beni Hassan in Menia Governorate show players holding bats result of the long palm branches, with a curved end similar to that of the bat hockey. Ball hockey has been made of compressed papyrus fibers covered with two pieces of leather shaped semicircle. The ball was dyed two or more colors.
Handball
Drawings of the sport are found on the tombs of Saqqara, five thousand years. The ball was made of leather and stuffed with hay or plant fibers, or made of papyrus be lighter and more durable. It has rarely been used for more than a game. The painting shows four young girls playing handball. Each team starts the ball to the other at the same time. Players can either be on their feet or on top of their teammates back while exchanging balls Gymnastics. This painting depicts a row Vault gymnastics Pharaohs. The players made consecutive arches without touching the ground with their heads and making more than one full turn in the air. At the end of the year the players stand firmly upright, which is one of the fundamental rules of the gym ground applied Olympics today.
Fishing Fishing is a sport practiced by kings, princes and commoners. There are many drawings of scenes of fishing as a hobby on the tombs of Saqqara Old Kingdom, as there on monuments the New Kingdom. The Egyptian Museum contains many types of fishing rods and hooks of different shapes, which indicate the advance of such sport in ancient Egypt.
Ancient Egyptians practiced High Jump field and track sports such as high jump. Two players in front of the other with legs straight, feet of a player on top of the toes of the other. If the third player was able to jump over this barrier, the two players placed their palms on top of their feet to raise the barrier that the third player had to jump through without touching. This game is still practiced in the Egyptian countryside and is called "goose steps".
Gymnastics (floor exercise) The Ancient Egyptians invented many sports, some for entertainment, and others to keep strong, physically fit and thin. The photo dates back to 2000 years BC. It shows a bit of gymnastics in which the body is bent backward to touch the hand of the earth, revealing the body flexibility. It is one of the exercises most commonly practiced today.
Rhythmic Gymnastics Photo shows four players performing gymnastics rhythm in different positions. The one on the left stands on one foot, stretch both arms horizontally, and lifting one leg as high as forward as possible to help him turn quickly and lightly. Both players are standing in the middle facing each other, bending their arms near their shoulders while twisting their size to the left and right. The fourth player stands on his head upside down in perfect balance, without touch the ground with his arms. All these positions are close to some practiced in rhythmic gymnastics today.
