GPS technology was invented for military use. However, over the years and with advances made, the GPS navigation device has made its way into athletic sports. Although the technology has been used in the management and cycling for some time, it is now used in some sports that may surprise you. Many athletes have begun using GPS technology skating sports, skiing, distance swimming and even windsurfing!
Garmin introduced the Garmin Forefunner primarily designed for runners, the Garmin Edge for cyclists. These units are incredibly accurate alternatives to heart monitors and pedometers standard used in the past by athletes and coaches.
Many are using GPS technology to follow the sport time and distance when making long, open water swimming. It is also an obvious safety to use a GPS when you're in a vast sea alone! In addition, using a GPS to navigate swimmers can maintain a straight course and may well stay on track.
While many GPS models are waterproof, many do not float not. Therefore, it is smart to invest in a lightweight, waterproof case. Most can be attached to the upper arm with strips of neoprene so as not to interfere with the activity. An additional band can be set so that the device can be worn on the leg. Furthermore, GPS information is always visible at first glance.
Most sports GPS technology is used in athletics, more athletes are finding new uses for them. But without a doubt, technology is now an inextricable part of the drive sports.
