When not on fire assignments, the crew performs project work such as prescribed burning and fuel reduction.

Living conditions for assignments may be primitive. Hot meals, soft beds, and regular showers are not waiting. field missions away from home can last several weeks with shifts per day on average 16 hours, but may extend up to 48 to 64 hours. Sleep deprivation is likely, is that routine exposure to dust, smoke, poison ivy, extreme weather (heat and cold) and other environmental hazards.

Hotshot vehicles become a home away from home during the peak season Hotshots can rarely spend more than two consecutive days at their own station. These vehicles, also known under the name Buggies, Crummies, or just the box, and the Hotshots perform personal equipment, tools, and everything else necessary to crew self-sufficient for several days.

A champion crew consists of 20-22 members. There are two formats for certified national champion teams.

The first format is:

A GS-9 Superintendent;

Two GS-8 Foreman (also known as captains or Assistant Superintendents)

Two GS-6 / 7 Squad Leaders, and

Two – three GS-5 senior firefighters.

About thirteen GS-4 and / or GS-3 temporary firefighters.

The second format will be a GS-8 Foreman, and three GS-6 / 7 team leaders

In addition, Hotshots are assigned various other specialized roles within the crew. These specialties may include:

Doctors – certified EMT-B level or higher.

Signalers and Sawyers – Generally considered saw as a "team", sawyers turns with someone who uses a chainsaw to cut, and one person pulling and throwing the pieces cut on the side of non-fire line by hand. Sales teams in general tasks to each tank of fuel used in the string. The reason for this is a cut with the saws and saturation are both physically exhausting, but in different ways, the tasks of negotiating so allows the team to do more work for longer. In order to effectively perform their functions, Hotshots must maintain a high level of fitness. When they are not on a fire assignment, teams spend at least an hour a day physical training (PT). This training may include abrupt increases, weightlifting, and travel over long distances. Traditionally, 5-10 mile runs were favored PT Hotshot crews. Recently, there was a shift toward greater hike. During these tours, Hotshots can ride without stopping for over an hour in the exercise of more than £ 60. in gear and tools.

At minimum, each Hotshot must fill up 3 miles carrying a bag with 45 pounds in less than 45 minutes. Other common minimum standards PT are met, 1 1 / 2 mile run in 10:35 or less, 25 + pushups in 60 seconds, 40 + sit-ups in 60 seconds, and 7 pull-ups. These standards are an absolute necessity minimum, and most features Hotshots far exceed those figures.
