How to identify and select a Lean Six Sigma Black Belt

Black Belts are knowledgeable and highly skilled in the use of Lean Six Sigma methodologies and tools, as well as facilitation and change management, and lead experts to increase levels of customer satisfaction and business productivity.

Black Belts have typically completed four weeks or 160 hours of training Lean Six Sigma, and showed control of the object by the completion of the project (s) (usually a minimum of 2 projects) and examination (usually a pass of 80%). Black Belts and Green Belts coach to receive advice and support from Master Black Belts. It is generally expected that a black belt will come in a belt Master Black or commercial role after the transfer is complete black belt in 18 months to three years.

Six Sigma Black Belt Qualities

What should you look in your black belt? Here's my personal top ten list. I notice that the list of chips instead of dialing. This was done intentionally, as a numbered list generally indicates that a point may be more valuable than another. In this case, all ten qualities are considered essential and should have equal weight.

Customer Advocacy – black belts must connect easily understand that customers are always beneficiaries of the process, and customers (internal or external) are always the final judge of the quality of the product or service. Understanding customer needs is the key to process improvement. Thus, a Black Belt candidate must speak clearly about how to remove process variation is a key to business improvement.

Passion – No fish are cold welcome in Lean Six Sigma. Black belts must be motivated, have initiative and have a positive personality. Sometimes they are supposed to be a cheerleader, to pick the team and help advance productively. Passion also gives them the courage to persevere even when things may get tough on a project.

The change in leadership – Black Belts demonstrated performance as a change agent in the past, regardless of function. During the interview, ask them how they challenged the status quo in their last role. They do not have? … Well, they may not be the right person for your Black Belt position. Modifying the and the way business is done may disturb employees. Change agents and change leaders have a way to make positive changes while generating support for change.

Communication – Black Belts are effective communicators, which is essential for the many roles they serve (trainers, coaches and mentors). Black Belts should be able to speak understandable to all audiences (staff to management workshop general). Understanding the various needs of audience members and tailor the message to address their concerns is the mark of a communicator effective. Once a black belt has these qualities, creating Power Point slide presentation (a requirement in corporate America, right?) Is a component snap.

Business Acumen – Black Belts are business leaders, not the quality managers of the past. As such, they should have known business and the ability to display the link between projects and desired business results. How is a project made the company stronger competitive and financially? You can ask questions during the interview to determine if the Black Belt candidates have made this connection in their prior roles.

Project Management – Lean Six Sigma is a project at a time. We should not lose sight of the fact that the black belt must manage field projects application, requirements, resources, schedule, and prospects of the variance. Basic knowledge of project management and project management experience are essential.

Technical Ability – The candidate of black belt should not be a graduate engineer or statistics, but in some cases it is beneficial – Provided the other qualifications listed the top ten are also present. In all cases, a black belt is required to collect and analyze the data to determine a strategy for improvement. Without some technical aptitude (computer literacy / software and analytical skills) Black Belt be frustrated in this role.

Team Player and Leader – Black Belt must possess the ability to lead, work with teams, be part of a team and understand team dynamics (formation, storming, norming, performing). To effectively lead a team, a black belt should be friendly, get along with people, have good influencing skills and motivate others.

Result Oriented – Black Belts are required to perform and produce tangible financial results for the company. They should be hardworking and quick to demonstrate success.

Fun – Black Belts should enjoy their jobs if they are passionate about them. Having fun, you encourage others to do likewise.

Qualities that did not make the Top Ten (but important)

Trust and integrity – These are requirements and are not negotiable.

Deep process knowledge – Lean Six Sigma is to have a team of specialists in the field working to eliminate defects and improve a process. Obviously, someone from the team should have a thorough knowledge of the study process. This should not be a black belt, but it can be.

It was – is – Sometimes a team gives credibility to a black belt has "been there." When the team is formed, which can help accelerate the acceptance of black belt, but it is not a requirement.

Knows Lean, Six Sigma, ISO, TQM, etc. – Remember, you build your pipeline of business leaders a black belt at a time. Having a role specific and detailed knowledge of Lean Six Sigma is not a precondition – they go through training; a list of ten best qualities for a black belt (listed above) is.

Various Work Experience – This will allow the black belt to appreciate more than just one aspect of a project to improve the process. For example, if a black belt is fresh out of college program statistics, he or she is likely to use primarily newly acquired skills and tools. Black belt with a diverse background can assess projects and issues more holistically.

Diploma – Although having a degree supports the idea that a person developed independent thinking skills, not having a degree does not mean that the candidate does not have a black belt independent thought skills. This quality is highly questionable as I saw a great black belts with or without qualifications.

If you hire a black belt compared to the selection and development of the procedure, I would say the following attributes are most critical in choosing the right candidate.

Facilitate the team – Build a successful team and consistent with the development tools, resources, training, objectives, performance measures and a flexible interpersonal style. Ability to facilitate the completion of team goals.

Problem Solving – Identify current and potential difficult situations and their causes. Study at a level that reveals the full impact of the situation. Identify trends and develop measures to solve or avoid repeating the event.

Process orientation – Ability to understand customer requirements, define and understand the processes and their effectiveness, efficiency and adaptability. Black belts have the ability to make a systematic view of activities in a broad perspective. Experts in process analysis and establish a vision for the optimization.

Facilitating Change – Encouraging people to seek opportunities for different and innovative approaches to addressing problems and opportunities. Facilitate the implementation and acceptance of change within the workplace.

Communication Skills – Transmit or absorb information and ideas through a variety of media to individuals or groups in a manner that engages an audience and helps them understand and retain the message.

Computer literate – Understands and uses basic office tools available on personal computers. Can do basic word processing, spreadsheets computing, e-mails, presentations and web browsing.

Program and Project Management – Identify customers, deliverables, scope of the project, plan and resources. Black Belts are trained in the removal of barriers, while making decisions that prevent the team concentrated on meeting quality, cost and speed.

Analyze the costs and ROI – Use methods of cost analysis and procedures for determining resource allocations and evaluate alternatives in areas of studio and office. Black Belts use established principles and practices, collect data, interpret information and explain the features and risks of volatile investment.
