Black Men
Many would agree there is a need for black men and women to meet and work toward healing our relationships. Blacks have the lowest marriage rates and divorce rates higher. While approximately 60% of white adults to marry, only 40% of black adults to marry. And only a third of Black children grow up in two parent companies. Passing blame and point fingers only hinders progress. We need to come together and communicate openly and honestly to find ways to bridge the communication gap that destroys our relationships.
For the last three years I have been involved in the formation of groups of round table discussion entitled "Withholding of the Ring" which treats the low marriage rates among African-Americans. I met many black women in their late thirties and even early forties who are worried about their prospects to never marry. Some of these women have completely abandoned their ideals of marriage and opted for children outside marriage. The dominant message suggests it is more likely for black women to become mothers than women.
The roundtable discussions, I help provide a safe environment for men and women of honesty to discuss issues that affect how we communicate to each others. Men have told me that the events leave them were really affected by how their behavior affects non-committal women. And some of the women came to me and admitted they did not know how much they really need their men until we have all met and communicated honestly.
I would like to share some of the events that occur during these roundtable discussions in the hope inspire others to take up the cause. They are not dating events but the events of association rather than to black men and women together as friends first. The emphasis is not on "connecting" but rather on how we can build trust, enduring relationships.
The event begins with a series of icebreakers. An icebreaker my favorite is when everyone has to exchange a friendly hug after themselves present. Participants are also asked to indicate what they expect from discussion.
We go to the rules of conduct brief discussions before. There are also provided documents that remind participants to be respectful in their comments and answers.
In Initially, some people may be on the edge, not knowing what to expect, so I try to make it fun and interactive discussion. A Opener fun is when men are asked to place the questions in a container sent to women and women's place in their questions in a container separately addressed to men. The questions are taken around the table, which gives everyone the opportunity to participate in the conversation and serves as a good way to get everyone warmed up.
I anticipate several years during the roundtable, but the favorite is what I call "Love says." I ask the men and women to choose names separate containers. Women choose men and men will choose women. Men are asked to put knees and profess their love for black women and women in employment exchange their love for Black men.
They must each begin their statement with "I love black men because …" and they are left to fill the void. This has nothing to do with romance. I designed this exercise to encourage a climate of unity and getting the message that this is not a woman Forum vs. men. Love Affirmations is always a hit and never fails to draw a few tears. But these are good tears. Mend tears that bring us closer Understanding how black men and women can improve their relationships.
