Kick Target

"Kick me where it counts" – a critical error in martial arts training and self-defense

During my recent visit Japan for training, there is an important thing that I noticed on most black belts I've worked with. Now if they were just have fun and do not really want to be able to defend themselves against a determined attacker if they ever meet one, then ok. But, if really they seek to be competent and have the ability to control a situation, then they probably should not be sending a clear message and dangerous to their abuser.

Before I tell you what was the debilitating many of my fellow black belts have been taken, let me tell you, Hatsumi Sensei or to watch any of the other Shihan instructors master ", we could easily neglect this problem. They could ignore it because, well, it seems that teachers do too! And yet …

… They are not!

That many students, both Bujinkan and others, see when they train in Japan, is the movement teachers to expose the vital goals – goals that could be exploited by an experienced opponent. The attacker punches, blows foot, or grabs, and the excesses of teachers back with one arm extended as if to block. But instead of taking a sound structure kamae, or position security, as represented in books, videos, and ancient texts, teachers are in a posture that is far too square to provide any coverage cons after the attacks.

And then, seeing this, students with no experience of real combat …

… Copy it.

Now the Technical copy of the teacher would not hurt, normally …

If the student knew what they were looking at.

Instead, students simply watch the movement of teachers, and focus on the parts step by step, with little or no regard for the important details-that will determine whether or not this technique works against an enraged attacker trying to you injury. They forget that their partner does not drive probably not experience the same struggle they do, but also lacks actually intend to harm them if they make a mistake. After all …

… Everyone is just there to have fun and win a row right?

What is it could be a mortal sin that would justify an article? What could be so bad that if left unchecked, could breed a false sense of security in his technique and ability that are visible only when a determined attacker Benefits?

Before answering this question, let me ask you a question. The question may seem to be directed only guys, but I assure you, is equally relevant to women. The question is simple and straightforward. There is no answer or something to guess what I'm asking.

Ready?

"Would you knowingly and voluntarily stand close enough to your attacker, and in a convenient location, so as to enable it to you start in the groin? "Or, as many of my friends and students might say," … Suddenly you right where it counts? "

I do not think. And yet, every time I had to remind black belt – who should know better or who have been taught better – to reposition themselves, because they were aligned for me to do exactly that. And if I saw that the fatal flaw, you can bet that any team looking for a quick and easy victory, he would catch too.

"But you are supposed to punch me next, "was the answer I heard most often." We are working on specific kata ("forms" or "example") and I do not have to worry about that. "

To that my answer was: "I do not care what form we work. "Cold, I know. But the fact that you work on a particular example, does not mean you forget all the essential teachings to stay safe. A kata is not in contradiction with the need for proper positioning, distancing, and angling Security cons of your next step forward.

"But he (the teacher) did it this way." To which I must admit, " somehow. "

What the student sees is often an approximation of what the teacher is being do. It is therefore necessary to go through the class, learn the lesson and then spend the next days, weeks or months, trying to understand it. And this is no exception.

What students saw was the body position of the teacher. What they were missing were …

… Body position of the teacher in the attack. In short, they lacked-important all away.

It is true that teachers were positioning themselves, they are beginning students are called "kamae sloppy." But at their level, they do not need "proper kamae" as taught to beginners because they know well positioned away from the abuser so he or she can not easily reach them with their next attack.

So where my training partners were to expose a vital goal, teachers were well in range for such an attack. same body position, much different results.

Point here is that if you're just training for fun and experience the ancient warrior, great. But if you want to learn to the survival of ancient warriors – courses designed to save your life if you need it …

… So you must be critical in your examination of the lessons themselves.

You need to get over your need to be right, or to look cool or show what you've learned and make sure you focus on what matters. Often, that means you find a training partner who wants to help you get better. He or she knows that this does not mean that your caress ego, but stressed that when you left you open for easy tracking.

Because if you do not, you may find that the message you send your abuser is …

"Hey!" Kick me where it counts! "
