Do you need an accelerometer to see the look on the Garmin Forerunner 405?

I'm looking top buy a Garmin Forerunner 405, but im confused on whether or not I need to buy the accelerometer to let me see my own pace? Are there other Watch "good" that shows the distance and pace worked?

The Forerunner 405 does not use a foot pod, it is completely gps. My friend has the 405, but he aspires to a rhythm. The distance is about right, but the pace is always like mile 11:00. My other friend has a 205 that always seems very accurate mile around 8:00 ET this is what we run. But I do not know if all 405 on inaccurate or if its just that its messed up.
