Agility Training
What is the youngest age can I start agility training with a puppy?

I plan to buy a puppy boxer, or a Schnauzer Giant and I want to get into agility competitions. I'm in Texas (D / FW) and want to help find a place to train and I also need to know the youngest age or the puppy the best start.

I compete with my sheltie agility. You'll love this sport. You can start training your puppy right away, even if your dog should refrain from jumping, weaving through heavy vertical line in slalom, and placing across all contact equipment amounted to more than 3-4 inches off the ground until his growth plates have closed their doors. In large breeds this occurs around age 12-18 months. If you're jumping and weaving, or if your puppy should spend an obstacle contact or halfway full, it may permanently damage is legs or spine. Smaller breeds mature faster …. about 8 months for a cocker spaniel dog size and abundance 6 months for a pug dog businesses. Because large breeds tend to be heavy-bodied and muscular, so it would not hurt to have your veterinarian x-ray your puppy to 12 months to confirm the growth plates are closed before moving on to more intense training. Another important point is to keep your dog on the lean side as he begins to ripen. Not hungry, but thinner than your pet to the average. Ribs should not be released, but the roll size and must be well defined, and ribs are easily felt (just not visible). During a workout half an hour, your dog may take 30 to 50 jumps. It's a lot of blows on his joints, especially if it bears an extra burden. In addition, training Agility usually involves a lot of candy, so be sure to reduce the evening meal your dog after your workouts to prevent excess weight gain. I used to live in Tyler, TX and there are several great agility clubs in your area. The first link is a coach who has the agility dog agility classes (low impact) this fall. I call them first. They begin to puppies 4 months of age on the material non-impact or low. They are clicker trainers (BIG PLUS !!!!!) The second link below for Clean Run Magazine ads group agility. Use the filters in the dropdown menu to find trainers and facilities in your area. Give a few of them a call, and go meet and attend a course or two. While you're there, you can ask for advice on what to look for when evaluating a range puppy for a perspective of agility, and breed they think is good for a first time manager. We have a number of boxers in my class agility competition and they are excellent agility dogs. They can be very quick and responsive to their masters. The only draw back, I see a boxer is their shorthand way of air pushed into the facial structure makes it overheat faster (same with pugs). So be careful and take extra water breaks to keep them cool in the summer months while training and competing. My personal experience with Giant Schnauzer is that they are indeed nimble, quick and intelligent … but they can be very aggressive dog (Think Very Terrier !!!). They can also be aggressive toward strangers who they believe threaten their owners, (Consider removal if they bite the judge when he raises his hand to signal a breakdown or off-course to his assistant who is keeping score). but all dogs are different. I just do not buy a Puppy lines of work in Germany or other breed of dog agility first time. Yes, they have a lot of training, but I think would be far too expensive for a new manager to be treated. You also have much to learn as your dog does when it comes to agility, and if you are also having to deal with behavior problems that come with a top coach you're going to feel super frustrated and none of you going to have fun. Here are some things you can do once you get your puppy home. 1. Sign up for a kindergarten class for puppies. Agility Dogs must be sociable with dogs and humans. Once your puppy is fully vaccinated, take it with you everywhere and present it to all sorts of people. Most of the training you'll do once you register a class of agility will be off leash for the safety of the dog on the equipment. Most trainers agility screen their prospective students before they allow them to come to class for you and the other student safety. Aggressive or uncontrollable dogs are generally not allowed to participate and will be asked to leave. 2. Form the bases. They cover most of that in your kindergarten class for puppies. Basically, you should teach your puppy to "sit" "stay", "low" and "come". 3. Train your puppy to heel with a loose leash on both sides while you walk. Agility dogs often have to work to on both the left and right sides of their masters during a cycle of courses. I use "heel" for the traditional left, and "Other side" for a bed to my right. 4. Buy some equipment like a tunnel, table (just take the legs up and use train and sit down on the table), sawtooth few boards and a brick yard (4-inch bass practice for dog walking), balance board sometimes called a council or a trainer for the tippy Buja used to the motion of his feet, and finally some free standing jump amounts and jump bar (keep the bar on the ground and train the puppy to pass between the uprights. He will get his feet on the bar, but will not actually jump.) Sorry for the long post Good luck and have fun!
